Nanosafety assessment of front-plane display materials in HI-ACCURACY

Within the EU project HI-ACCURACY, BNN’s scientific research team published this report as a useful guide and orientation document for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that want to start using quantum dots in their production.

To that end, we put together basic concepts of good manufacturing practices, risk assessment tools and EU regulations which could become relevant. Then we presented a methodology which can be used to ensure safety and sustainability of nanomanufacturing pipelines, as well as examples of the ways in which HI-ACCURACY partners implement safe work procedures in research and development laboratories.

Finally, we recommend materials that could be helpful in designing safe and sustainable quantum dot (and other manufactured nanomaterial) production lines.
The report ends with three concrete recommendations, as well as a list of references for further reading.

This report was supported by previous work performed within the scope of Hi-Response (“Innovative High Resolution Electro-Static printing of Multifunctional Materials”, H2020 NMP-PILOTS-Programme) and INSPIRED (“INdustrial Scale Production of Innovative nanomateRials for printEd Devices”, H2020 NMP-PILOTS-Programme). Further consultation with colleagues from the project Gov4Nano (“Implementation of Risk Governance: meeting the needs of nanotechnology”, H2020 NMBP-Programme) and the European NanoSafety Cluster (NSC), including its different Working Groups, enhanced interdisciplinary and international collaboration in the field of nanosafety and Safe-by-Design.

Project partner IAP provided project-specific technical specifications and practical insights into all project-relevant processes during an on-site company visit. Alexander Graff, expert at ÖSBS, conducted workplace measurements for potential exposure assessment and supported in the results evaluation.
